Case Study: Rugby Australia
Overview
At the Official British & Irish Lions Lunch Events, Honeycomb partnered with Rugby Australia to deliver a gifting experience that felt as special as the event itself. Guests received personalised luggage tags, embossed live on-site, a thoughtful nod to the international nature of the tour and its VIP attendees.
Some tags were prepared ahead of time in our warehouse, while others were embossed live at the event to keep up with last-minute registrations.
The Experience
Guests arrived at the Official British & Irish Lions Lunch and were greeted with the chance to have their initials embossed onto a leather luggage tag. The process happened right in front of them: the press of the machine, the detail in the finish and the excitement of seeing something made just for them.
Our activation station was fully equipped to deliver on the spot, with:
- Live embossing machines set up at each location (two in Sydney to meet demand)
- Pre-embossed tags ready for early registrants
- On-site personalisation to capture initials from last-minute attendees
- Post-event embossing to make use of remaining stock as staff thank-you gifts
The mix of preparation and live personalisation kept the flow smooth while still delivering that special touch of theatre.
The Unique
What set this activation apart was the way personalisation became part of the event experience itself. Unlike a typical gift where items are handed out pre-made, here guests were able to see their luggage tags embossed live, right in front of them.
For early registrants, we prepared tags in advance to ensure a smooth flow on the day, while late sign-ups had the chance to submit their initials on-site and watch them come to life. The flexibility meant no one missed out and every attendee walked away with a keepsake that carried their own mark.
This wasn’t just about giving guests a branded item it was about creating a personal connection in the middle of one of rugby’s most prestigious tours. The end result was a meaningful memento that perfectly aligned with the scale of the British & Irish Lions Tour.
The Benefits
1. A lasting keepsake
Guests left with a luggage tag they could use long after the event, extending the memory of their Rugby Australia experience.
2. A smooth event flow
Honeycomb’s mix of pre-embossing and live on-site personalisation ensured both early and late registrations were handled seamlessly.
3. Flexibility for the client
With Honeycomb’s support, leftover tags were repurposed post-event as thank-you gifts for staff, ensuring nothing went to waste.
4. Brand alignment
The personalised luggage tags reflected the international nature of the British & Irish Lions Tour, aligning perfectly with Rugby Australia’s vision for a premium guest experience.
The Collaboration
This activation was a true partnership between Honeycomb and Rugby Australia. Together, we balanced preparation with on-the-spot personalisation to deliver a smooth guest experience across multiple cities.
Rugby Australia’s team trusted Honeycomb to handle both the logistics and the management of the luggage tags. That collaboration made it possible to scale up in Sydney with two embossing machines while still keeping the experience personal. Post-event, we worked closely with their team to repurpose leftover tags as staff gifts, ensuring every piece of merchandise added value.
Our collaboration came to life through:
- Scaling to demand – Two embossing machines in Sydney to serve 600+ attendees.
- Blending preparation and flexibility – Pre embossed tags for early registrants and on-the-spot embossing for late sign-ups.
- Maximising value – Repurposing leftover branded tags post-event as thank-you gifts for Rugby Australia staff.
- Shared focus on experience – A joint commitment to making every guest
interaction feel premium and personal.
The Results
The activation ran seamlessly across three cities, despite the scale and the challenge of late registrations. Hundreds of VIP guests walked away with personalised luggage tags that felt thoughtful, leaving a lasting impression well beyond the event.
For Rugby Australia, it was a chance to elevate their hospitality experience during one of the sport’s most prestigious tours and to create a meaningful connection with their international guests.
